I have volunteered to help a friend with a JD 420. It has no spark. What I have done so far: Checked plugs and wires, did resistance check on coil, 5 ohms on the primary 13K ohms on the secondary. I have battery volts to the positive side of the coil, 10.6 volts during cranking. I even attached a jumper directly from the battery to coil ...I'm pretty sure the red wire is always hot, so you do not need to have the key on.
